McAfee SiteAdvisor for Internet Explorer is a great program to protect you online. This installs as an add-on to the internet explorer.
What this does is that it keeps an online database with McAfee, which stores information about the internet websites. Almost all the popular websites are in the list. It manages by people at McAfee and its servers. The websites are sorted according to the relation with other websites. It stores the links/relation between websites. So, if we know that a particular website is linked with some bad website (having virus or that cheats people).
While browsing, for example, in Google or Yahoo search (and many other search engines are supported), we can see small icon on the right side of each link. A "green" tick means, good site. A "yellow" means linked to bad sites or have some threat level. A "red" "X" means websites with virus or misleading contents.
A "question mark" means that the information about the website is not present in the database. So, we can report those websites manually. It is not reported automatically.
After reporting a website, they will check the site, and add it as a good or bad site. They have an online forum like website, where we can check the status of a particular website. For example, if we are the owner of a website, and that site is reported a "RED" site, then we can give complaints. Also, if we think a "GREEN" website is spamming you, you can report it there.
It says whether a website is spammy, linked to "RED" or "GREEN" sites, and its details, if we need, and whether the download from that website is risky (contain malware, adware, virus, etc).
McAfee SiteAdvisor for Internet Explorer is available as an "enterprise" edition / version, which has link safety checking in e-mail & IMs and "protected mode" to block "RED" websites and it supports a password for changing the settings.
One serious lack of the program that I would like to point out is that it doesn't have any facility to filter the websites according to the age range of a user. Means, it cannot filter porn or other undesirable content. It would have made the program a great tool.
